It is a Broadway original musical opened on December 1, 2005. It is the musical adaptation of 1983 Pulitzer Prize? wining novel of the same title by Alice Walker. Although this musical is the adaptation of the original novel and 1985 film by director Spielberg, both the movie, with its beautiful image and the musical, with its superb music, depicts gself-awakening; strongly, that? is the creative theme of author Alice Walker.? The story sets in a small town of Georgia from 1909 to 1937. It is a tale of one African America woman, finding herself. Celie, the central character, is only 14 years old, yet she is already mother of two children, result of her stepfatherfs sexual abuse. Her children are taken away by her stepfather. And soon, she is forced to marry a widower with children,? who Celie only knows him as Mister. Celie receives physical abuse daily? by Mister in her married life.? Additionally, she is humiliated emotionally by being forced to care for her husbandfs mistress, Shung. But Shung begins to love Cellie because of the way Cellie lives her life honestly. Then Shung becomes Celliefs inspiration to change her life. In this musical, the darkness of the sexual and physical abuse scenes, which take up the first half of an original story, is toned down. Instead, it emphasizes on Celliefs strength to be awaken as one human being, incorporated with tunes of Jazz, Ragtime, Gospel, and Blues, which are born within American black culture. Book is written by Marsha Norman, who specializes dram. She is a winner of 1983 Pulitzer Prize in Drama by gNight Motherh. It is the same year Alice Walker won the Prize by gThe Color Purple.h The highlight is, without saying, the music. |
